Riding the Wave: Finding Your Calm with Generalized Anxiety
A compassionate look at generalized anxiety and how urge surfing can help you find calm in uncertain moments.

Riding the Wave: Finding Your Calm with Generalized Anxiety
Have you ever noticed how anxiety feels less like a quiet thought and more like a restless ocean, constantly churning with "what-ifs," anticipation, and a steady, exhausting current of worry? When your mind refuses to slow down, just getting through the day can feel like swimming against a powerful tide.
If this sounds familiar, please know that you do not have to navigate these heavy waters alone. Helping individuals untangle these thoughts and find genuine peace is exactly why I became a therapist. While my clinical training guides my practice, my deep empathy for anxiety also comes from a personal place, as I have managed generalized anxiety for as long as I can remember. I know firsthand how exhausting the storm can feel, and that lived experience is what drives my passion to help you find your own sense of calm in the unknown.
The Story Behind Tidal Path
When I was envisioning my practice, I knew it had to be called Tidal Path Therapy. The name comes from my deep love for the beach, which has always been my ultimate sanctuary. No matter how loud the anxiety gets in my head, standing by the ocean immediately grounds me, reminding me that I am part of something vast, and that there is a natural rhythm to everything.
But the ocean is also the perfect metaphor for how we experience anxiety, which connects directly to a powerful therapeutic technique called urge surfing.
When a wave of worry or panic takes over, our natural instinct is to fight it, run from it, or try desperately to control it. We want the uncomfortable feelings and physical tightness to disappear immediately, which often only creates more distress.
Urge surfing teaches us to do the exact opposite, allowing us to sit with the discomfort and safely ride it out.
Anxiety behaves exactly like an ocean wave. It starts small, builds up in intensity, reaches a peak, and then naturally breaks and rolls back out to shore. When we practice urge surfing, we learn how to breathe through the momentum of our emotions. We recognize that an uncomfortable thought or a spike of anxiety might feel overwhelming at its peak, but it will pass if we allow ourselves to ride it out instead of exhausting ourselves by fighting against it.
A Daily Reminder
Because I navigate this journey too, I wear a gold wave ring on my finger every single day.
Whenever I feel a familiar tightening in my chest, or notice my thoughts beginning to race, I look down at that ring. It serves as my physical anchor, reminding me that I do not have to fear the high tide of my emotions. It is a daily symbol that we are all resilient enough to ride out the wave, even at its absolute peak, knowing that calmer waters are always on the other side.
Anxiety tries to convince us that the unknown is dangerous, and that discomfort is permanent. In our work together, we will focus on practical, grounding tools like urge surfing to help you tolerate those uncomfortable moments, quiet the noise, and reclaim your peace. You do not have to change who you are to find relief; you just need the right tools to navigate the shoreline of your mind.
